Young love lasts for six decades

IT'S a relationship that could have ended on a disastrous first date.

Instead, Thelma and Roy Geiger are about to mark their 60th wedding anniversary, wondering where the years went and recalling with humour the circumstances that forged their lifelong bond.

On their first date Roy planned to take Thelma Nolan to a dance on his motorbike, but on the way they were involved in an accident.

She spent the next 12 months in hospital with a broken leg, receiving numerous visits from and being taken care of by the man who was to become her husband.

"It was nice, he could've dumped me," she said.

As soon as she recovered they were married at St Mary's Catholic Church in South Mackay on December 21, 1957. She was 19 and he was 20.

They both find it "hard to believe it's been that long.

"We love each other and she's a good cook," Mr Geiger said.

"That's the only thing he loves me for," Mrs Geiger joked.

The couple first met when they both lived at Slade Point and were on a bus going to see a movie at the Princess Theatre, which used to be in Victoria Street.

Mr Geiger said he shuffled over a bit on the bus seat and said hello.

They kept in touch as they lived down the road from each other.

Throughout their marriage, Mr Geiger ran his own business, Geiger Plumbing, while Mrs Geiger worked in cafes and ran a day care centre.

Mrs Geiger said they only took their first holiday after retiring - a train trip to Darwin and Perth, which she described as one of the highlights of their years together.

With three children, 15 grand-children and 24 great grand-children, they had a big turnout at their Diamond Wedding celebration with family and friends at the weekend.
