Take care: While the family is away, the thieves may play

THE school holidays are the best times of the year to turn off the TV, pack a couple of suitcases, load the family into the car and head off on an exciting adventure.

But while you are lying on a remote beach, enjoying a guided tour or boarding a plane to France, some unknown person or persons could be taking advantage of your absence.

A vacant house represents a world of opportunity for a thief - and the school holidays mean there are plenty of them scattered throughout the neighbourhood.

There is not much worse than to receive a call informing you that your house has been broken into while you are away.

However it is even more horrifying to discover the theft when you arrive home.

After a house is burgled, one of the hardest things for owners to comprehend is the knowledge that they may never see some of their belongings again.

A robbery can also cause prolonged stress, emotional trauma and in some cases paranoia.

But there are steps you can take to ensure your home is protected against intruders - and they don't mean transforming your home into Fort Knox.

HOME SAFETY TIPS

  •  Join a Neighbourhood Watch program and if you are close friends with your neighbour, ask them to keep an eye on your property during your absence.
  •  If you are leaving a pet cat or dog at home, ask different friends to go to your place to feed them. Also ask them to collect any mail or newspapers which are delivered. Remember, making a property look busy, clean and inhabited can deter burglars.
  •  Install timers in different rooms and set them to go on and off at different times. Timers can also be set on radios.
  •  Ensure all your doors and windows are properly locked, especially if they cannot be seen from the street or the neighbouring property.
  •  Install a burglar alarm.
  •  Watch for any changes in your neighbourhood during the school holidays. If you see someone in your street on more than one occasion who is not visiting a neighbour or making a delivery, write a detailed description of their appearance and contact police.
  •  Install safeguard gauze on your doors and windows. These simple measurements act as powerful defence mechanisms.
  •  Eliminate hiding spots around your house by trimming back trees or bushes. A well manicured yard will make your home look secured and regularly cared for.
  •  Place valuable items in a hidden safe and make sure they are insured for safety.
  •  If you hold a firearm licence, ensure any firearms you possess are securely locked away and hidden from view.
  •  Review your insurance policy and ensure it meets your requirements.
  •  If you are renting, contact your landlord and let them know how long you will be away for. They may be happy to check the property during your holiday.
  •  If your house is broken into, contact police immediately and make a list of items missing.
