READERS VIEWS: On whether we should have euthanasia or not

PUBLIC opinion seems to be on the side of choice, after around 30 people had their say on the Morning Bulletin's Facebook page.

We asked for people's thoughts on euthanasia.

Nick Hudson: It's the persons own choice and no one else's. It should be legal, mainly for terminal illnesses, especially dementia. What's the point of living for years after you've lost your mind and you aren't you?

Melody Gee: If that's what they need to end the suffering they're going through, then I'm for it. Would rather go peacefully and at peace with myself than be a burden on my family and friends and in huge amounts of pain.

Rhonda Helen Smoorenburg: I definitely think there would be some circumstances in which it would be very difficult not to be empathetic to someone's wish to end their suffering.

Jessica Williams: Personal decision, it shouldn't be called a "sin" or "cowards way out" if we see animals suffering we put them out of their suffering. Why should it be any different for someone dying from a terminal death or suffering etc?

Letishya Mills-Latifi: Once you see your loved ones in so pain slowly dying wanting to be over it breaks your heart. Why try to keep someone alive when they are on their death bed just wanting peace. If it was your pet your told to "put them to sleep" because it's the nicest thing to do. So why not have that option for yourself or loved ones it doesn't make sense to me.

Rennie Lisa: If you can put an animal down, should be able to do same for anybody suffering debilitating illness. I'm all for euthanasia

Lauren Jensen: I believe if there is absolutely no hope of a terminally ill person ever improving or regaining back any quality of life then that option should be available if they so desire.

Alyson Ballard: Quality of life is a big deal for me and I believe no one would want to live a life stuck in a hospital bed or a home in a nappy for the rest of their life, in pain or with dementia, it is disgraceful that we euthanise animals but not our loved ones.

We discussed the same-sex marriage issue a fair bit recently, so we thought we'd change it up.The Bulletin would like to know, what are readers thoughts/feelings about euthanasia?
