The clippers started shearing as the hall at Bunker's Hill filled with laughter and cheers of encouragement.

Mr Tiernan, the principal of Bunker's Hill State School, had his head shaved to raise money for the school Chaplaincy program.

On Wednesday July 29, Mr Tiernan faced the unthinkable - clippers wielded by six lucky students.

Under the guidance of Mrs Shandelle Trapp, an experienced hairdresser, the students were given the rare opportunity to shave the head of their Principal.

As their name was drawn from the hat, they had to ask themselves one question - to shave or not to shave?

Most took advantage, shaving happily in every possible direction.

Staff, parents and Chappy Kate were all given the chance to participate in the shaving of Mr Tiernan's head.

After each participant completed their shave, the crowd, encouraged by vocal school leaders, chanted for more hair removal.

His beard was the final chant.

After some thought, Mr Tiernan agreed to a goatee.

Over $200 was raised toward the school Chaplaincy program, which is a great effort for a small school.

Apart from feeling cold, Mr Tiernan and the school community are proud of his efforts.
