Shirt makes showering easier after breast surgery

THE Shower Shirt is designed to be used post-breast surgery, protecting against water intrusion to the drain sites.

It's designer, Lisa Crites, developed the shirt after going through bilateral mastectomy and not being able to find a water-resistant product to protect herself while showering.

"Taking a shower without protecting the sites can be problematic as water is laden with bacteria which in turn can cause infection to the patient," Ms Crites said.

"My goal is to make other women feel better after the physical trauma of having their breasts amputated.

"It stands to reason if the patient feels better physically, they will feel better emotionally, something that's severely needed after a mastectomy."

The shirt is made of a durable, anti-microbial treated, waterproof type material with unlimited shelf life and is machine washable.

It can be used during the post-operative recuperative period, or only while drain or catheters are in place.

The edges are elasticised so it fits snuggly against the skin on the arms, waist and neck.

The neck is lined with microfibre, to absorb water drops, with a velcro strap and drawstring under the jaw line to assure an extra tight fit.

It has a front zip with a weather flap and capped sleeves.

The shirt also has drain pockets to host drain bulbs and Velcro loops that support the wrapping and holding of the drain tubes.

The Shower Shirt extends two to four inches below the breast line and fits loosely across the chest, torso and under-arms to avoid pressure on drains sites and surgical areas.
