READERS DISCUSS: Adani Carmichael mine approval backflip

The Federal Court evoked the government's approval of Indian conglomerate Adani's controversial Carmichael mega-mine in Queensland on yesterday.   Here are what readers had to say on Facebook:   Lyn Korte - Do you really think those jobs would have gone to central Queensland people . ..i think not Joshdaddy Gillespie. John Khanna - Yes it would have gone to Central Queenslanders. Some of my mates live in rocky and gladstone applied for the jobs on Carmichael website and got the positive reply. They are now devastated Rachel Jones - There will be other jobs. There would NEVER be another Great Barrier Reef that would have been ruined by the coal port they were planning to build. There would be way more jobs if the government started relying more on renewable energy rather than coal Lette Letty - Those jobs would not have gone to us locals. I'd rather enjoy the reef than work for foreign wankers anyway. They already own enough of Australia. John Khanna - Lette Letty, this is a world of globalisation not of a "frog in the well." Every country which is growing or has grown in the past is because of the foreign investments..Local companies pay 18 to 20 dollars an hour, whereas these mining companies pay big money and ask those people who work there whether they want to work for foreign wankers or not... They will say yes... Natalie Cummins - This is not good news on a number of fronts! 1) this was going to provide thousands of jobs which our region & Australia needs and 2) the Indians were planning on sending coal back to India to power their electricity. You know the stuff that helps cook, provides light at night, helps with a myriad of things we take for granted. But short sighted greenies of course can't fathom thinking outside of their tiny box. frown emoticon Peter Turner -Sense prevailed over greed. Where does your food come from ?? How much land and how many waterways would be polluted. How much water would be used. John Khanna - Absolutely right Natalie.. some of my mining mates in rocky and gladstone are devastated after hearing this news, as they are without jobs and struggling to pay their bills and instalments Rachel Jones - Short sighted greenies? More like greenies who are looking long into the future. Renewables are the way of the future. What about the Great Barrier Reef? Not only is it the habitat of hundreds of animals and coral, but it's a huge tourist draw as well. Travis Whiting - I'm not a greenie but I know a lot of farmers. Mines destroy the water table, once you crack that water table you lose that quality and in most cases you loses the water. Is it worth creating jobs at the expense of the environment and the lose of land ...See More Natalie Cummins - 'Sense prevailed over greed'. Really?! Go ask the poor Indians what greed is?! Is trying to decrease infant mortality greed? Is wanting to feed and keep your family warm in winter greedy? And in regards to where our food comes from, you need to take up this with Coles & Woolworths, that is a much bigger issue! Peter Turner - I stand by my statement. Yes there is a vast difference between the rich and poor in India which is a governmental issue and Adanis project here would do little to fix it.   It was rightfully rejected on false environmental proposals overseen by a corrupt coalition government. Not only did they overlook the two endangered species they also forgot about the extra dredging at the expanded ports. Adani's environmental record is poor. Adani also has overstated how many jobs it would provide ( by over 9000 ).   Oh and a 4 year drought induced by climate change has just as much impact as the multinationals on farmers. As does mining and fracking which add to climate change Keith Kelley - So the environment runs second to a few jobs for the locals? And I cannot see any written guarantees that most jobs will go to locals. Have you got that piece of paper on you? More likely the jobs will be overseas workers. All Coles and Woollies will do when there's no good dirt and clean water to grow food is import it all from overseas. Like India being dependent on overseas fuel, for us it will be food. As someone said today, "in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king." For me that means focusing only on what's best for their agenda. Natalie Cummins - 'None of the jobs will go to overseas workers'. It was part of the agreement for the mine to be successful. It would generate around 4000 jobs, a few more than a few local jobs. Peter Turner - At last count as stated by Adani in court will employ 1500-1700. Down from 10000 Peter Turner - Great news for the local environment and the Great Barrier Reef. Great work by the Mackay conservation group and all those who fought for this cause John Khanna - but bad news for those unemployed miners who are struggling to pay their house loan instalments and car instalments... Peter Turner - Yes that's an unfortunate side to this. Maybe if government gave up its reliance on coal and supported renewables that are our future there will be more than enough jobs Kristen Williamson - Yes what a good point Peter. Because wind turbines are not made in factories that use electricity that comes from the closed coal mines. And it takes so many hundreds of people to work in those wind turbines once they are finished being constructed to stay employed and have a house and food. Anne Henderson  -They keep rabbitting on about how there will be plenty of jobs in the renewal energy industry....notice they havn't been able to give any detail around what exactly those jobs would entail...   Read more of this discussion here:
