NDSHS student leaders' self discovery and training

NOOSA District State High School Year 12 student leader Amber Jones and Year 11 student leader Chandler Kamradt attended the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) Leadership Day on Thursday.

Both Amber and Chandler thoroughly enjoyed hearing the trials and tribulations of local adventurer John Cantor, who recently achieved his six-year dream of traversing the Brooks Range solo.

John Cantor completed the 1,600km expedition across Arctic Alaska on his fourth attempt, following three failed missions, which almost resulted in his death.

John spoke about the importance of resilience, positive mantras and goal setting and being flexible in your thinking in order to approach failed tasks in new and creative ways.

The students felt immediate benefits from breathing techniques used to manage stress and anxiety as taught to them by The Breathe Project's Kat Tucker.

Kat Tucker explained the importance of taking deep breaths down to the stomach to clean out the stale air stored inside the body, and in so doing, assisting with relaxation and a good sleep.

Chandler felt very sleepy after the relaxation activity and savoured the opportunity for some shut eye on the drive back to school.

Amber and Chandler spent the last session of the day undertaking some self-discovery through a simple test, which assisted in determining who they are as leaders, with a focus on the attributes they bring to the NDSHS leadership team.

The USC Leadership Day was a very interesting series of presentations and workshops, which provided Amber and Chandler with some useful skills, advice and activities that they can discuss with the student leadership team at the Student Council meeting next Tuesday, March 15.
