READERS DISCUSS: Pet adoption numbers reporting online

AT TUESDAY'S Rockhampton Regional Council meeting, Mayor Margaret Strelow asked Capricorn Animal Aid to disclose any links it had to the pet rescue Facebook page Pound Reform Alliance Australia or to the Michael McMillan mayoral campaign.

The Mayor's questions follow social media backlash against the council - from both pet rescue organisation websites - about the pound's management of animals and euthanasia rates.

On the website:

tohellinahandbag - Rockhampton City - Why no CAA response? 2 sides to all stories.

hannah.stark2 - Rockhampton - I'm sure CAA will respond shortly. They work full time jobs so fitting this type of thing in while trying to continue rescuing the animals must be hard. The issue isn't even the statistics - it's the fact RRC do nothing to get the animals adopted. They leave it to volunteer rescue groups. If there were no volunteer rescue groups the euthanasia rate would be 100%... Due to no in house adoptions.

thecatswhiskers - Wandal - This was a scheduled monthly Health and Compliance committee meeting. Cr Ellen Smith is the chair. Why has Strelow taken over the meeting? Bizarre.

Bradrockyview - Rockyview - Rather than Margaret refuting allegations and attacking volunteer organizations for seemingly supporting her opposition, maybe she and the council could actually work to fix the problem. Afterall the council are really the only ones that can force people to change how they treat pets. Make laws tougher and actually enforce them. I am pretty sure CAA and other rescue organisations wished they didn't have to exist, but due to lowlife pet owners and a seemingly ineffective council they do.

On Facebook:

Nyssa Stolberg - Cr Strelow and the RRC have already said the 1) the current pound is unsuitable for an in-house adoption program and it is, 2) they acknowledge the need for a new pound is required 3) they have so far been unable to find a suitable site and have been looking since at least 2011 and 4) if they can find a suitable site the monies from the 2019-2020 budget will be brought forward for it. I'd also like to know where Mr McMillan is going to build the new pound since apparently this is all just going to go away if he is voted in.
