Confidence gained after learning ropes in retail

SERVING customers and arranging shop-front merchandise are just some of the skills Aldridge State High School teens are learning.

It is all part of the certificate II in retail offered to students in Grade 11 to help them become job-ready.

About nine students signed up on Friday to complete the two-year course on top of their senior studies.

As well as learning about work-place health and safety through the theory component, the kids will work up to eight-hours every Friday in a Maryborough-based business.

While money handling is necessary, Epic Employment school consultant Don Bayley said the biggest achievement was when kids mastered basic communication skills, including maintaining eye contact when talking to someone.

"Becoming more confident around others can be a milestone achievement, especially for kids with learning difficulties," Mr Bayley said.

"When they finish the course, it is like they are a different person," he said.

Certificates including qualifications in trades are also offered at the school.
