Cane back burnt in battle to contain Mackay region fire

UPDATE 6PM: FOUR rural fire crews have contained a fire that burnt across 20ha of cane land. 

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said the vegetation fire in Oakenden was brought under control at 5.30pm. 

He said a series of spot fires had also been extinguished along Eton-Homebush Rd. 

One crew remains on scene to monitor the situation.

INITIAL: FIRE crews have been forced to back burn through a paddock of cane in order to contain a raging vegetation fire at Oakenden.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said crews initially received the call about a fire on Eton-Homebush Rd just before 4pm.

"They're doing backburning of cane to prevent it spreading," she said.

Crews are positioned on the banks of Bagley Creek to stop the fire, the QFES spokeswoman said.

Two crews are on scene, with another crew heading to the blaze.
