Bridge over the Burrum River would be built in two stages

A PROPOSED bridge over the Burrum River, expected to cost $30 million, would be built in two stages.

There are calls to establish a review committee for the project.

Hinkler Bridge Steering Committee secretary Doug Waters said the bridge could be built in two stages.

Stage one would involve building the bridge and about 8km of new road.

The road would then connect to Buxton Rd which runs to Childers.

The second stage would involve connecting about 15km of new road to the existing Woodgate Rd.

Mr Waters said the bridge would run beside the township of Buxton.

Former Federal Member for Hinkler Paul Neville proposed the idea to the Coalition twice previously.

"I think the whole Wide Bay region from Gympie to Agnes Waters would benefit from a coastal highway," he said.

"It would strengthen the commercial ties between Bundaberg and Hervey Bay."

Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell was trying to organise a meeting of all levels of government to discuss the project.

Cr O'Connell said he'd welcome Mr Neville's input.

"He's very well connected," he said.

"He knows the area well and it's a project that's probably closest to him."
