Dining in: Aveo Newstead creates buzz with stunning menu
GROWING older can be delicious!
Forget any idea you had about retirement villages and soft, bland food - Aveo Newstead's Executive Chef Gillian Hirst binned that idea and restocked with fresh food, fresh tastes and a restaurant menu to rival the best in Brisbane.
Last week, myself and my digital producer, Quinn Jones, accepted an invitation from Aveo to dine at their private restaurant - Select Dining.
But before you get excited over what I'm about to write, I'll give you the bad news first: This restaurant is for residents only!
The good news is that this menu defies any age-old retirement village concepts.
There's no doubt that Aveo's goal to provide a dining menu that features meals as nutritious as they are delicious has been achieved. Additionally, professional staff with warm welcomes working within a modern dining interior contributes to a delightful culinary experience.
We started with a serving of fresh Tasmanian oysters that tingled our tastebuds, squeezed in a special dish of trout and wasabi, followed by mouth-watering main meals of sand crab lasagne (renowned as a Gillian's signature dish) and a perfectly seared steak and salad. The medium sized meals meant there was a little room left for a couple of amazing desserts - think sweet Iranian floss, pistachio ice-creams, a decoration of delicate sweet French flower buds.
The wine list corresponded with the excellent meals - it's smart and a little bit different. We sampled the sparkling South Australian Pinot Grigio, Aramis and it was true to its recommended description.
Select Dining is the place for a social lunch or special celebrations. Whatever your reason, you can't help but be impressed and, perhaps, even a tad surprised at this super dining experience.
