All hail all things Men’s Sheds
THIS week provides a chance for all who benefit from their local Men's Shed to stand shoulder to shoulder in celebration of the national Men's Shed Awareness program, Shed Life.
"From all walks of life men often stumble into a Men's Shed looking for something (anything!) to do, but they find much more: community, purpose and friendship," the Australian Men's Sheds Association (AMSA) writes.
There are over 1000 Men's Shed around Australia. The movement has also gone global. There are about 450 sheds in Ireland, 300 in the UK, 100 in New Zealand and 20 in Canada.
"In the shed, you'll find the activities reflect the diverse range of interests of members. Anything from woodwork and metalwork, to photography and technology, to gardening and most of all - tinkering about.
"But Shed Life isn't just about woodwork and manual crafts."
Men's Sheds are a place for men to knock around with a group of mates in a supportive way. Members use their time in many different and often for the benefit of their local community. It's not always about the age-old activity of men enjoying just tinkering. They can be found creating woodwork and metalwork items, delving into photography and technology, gardening
"Men's Sheds are vital community investments delivering programs and initiatives that foster community spirit and contribute to building a more inclusive Australia," AMSA says.
Throughout this week Men's Sheds will be holding special events to showcase the work they do, their community involvement and to welcome prospective new members.
